Most Popular Aviation Job Roles

Most Popular Locations for Aviation

More information

Every year, nearly 2 million flights take off and land in the UK. These include freight, military, agricultural, and commercial airplanes, but around three quarters of all flights are for leisure purposes. The Aviation industry provides approximately 120,000 jobs in the UK, and a few of the most popular positions are cabin crew, mechanical engineer, aircraft handling personnel, and pilot. Many more employment opportunities are also to be found in the management, staffing, and day-to-day operations of airports such as Manchester and those in the London area.

As about half of all flights land and leave from London, the vast majority of jobs are concentrated there. Of course, for those employed aboard aeroplanes, travel is a major part of the work, and pilots and flight crews spend a great deal of time away from home while working unconventional and frequently changing hours.

Major employers and salaries

Most careers in aviation and aerospace are high paying, and salaries in the UK range from £20-60K. The overall average annual income is about £40K, although those working in Scotland and London make closer to £50K. The largest employers in the industry are BAE, Rolls Royce, Bombardier Aerospace, and Smiths Group. Degree and certification requirements vary widely by position, but degree level qualifications are expected for most roles, and advanced degrees are needed for engineering, administration, and pilot positions.
