More information

A career in Marketing offers a diverse range of job opportunities and enables businesses to connect Product Development with Sales. The industry is particularly popular with graduates and Marketing recruitment agencies will aim to place new entrants, as well as experienced executives, into client side and agency side Marketing jobs. Major cities offer a broad range of roles within this industry - with popular locations including London, Manchester and Bristol.

Recruitment in the Marketing industry

Recruitment for the Marketing industry predominantly focuses on finding staff for brand development and communication roles. Due to the diversity of the field, a Marketing recruitment agency may specialise in a particular discipline, such as Affiliate Marketing, Trade Marketing, Digital Marketing or Advertising. The majority of the vacancies advertised are client side (in-house), as part of a company’s Marketing department, however a recruitment consultancy may also work to fill freelance and agency side jobs. Marketing employment figures show that around a third of all graduate jobs are within this line of work, so agencies will also commonly recruit university leavers.

Salaries and entry requirements

The average salary for a permanent Marketing job is £45,000, however this figure is impacted by senior Marketing jobs in London, which can potentially command in excess of £100,000. As a result of the high earnings, there is a concentration of Marketing recruitment agencies within the UK capital, however this is also true of cities including Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Entry-level jobs such as that of a Marketing Assistant, will usually have a starting salary of £16,000-£20,000, while a Brand Manager or Marketing Manager may earn £40,000-£60,000. Contract or temporary roles usually pay hourly rates of £8-£14.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) can provide training and qualifications for those looking for professional development. Some employers may prefer candidates with a diploma awarded specifically by this authority, however many will accept applicants with any degree related to Advertising, Marketing, Business or Design. Careers in marketing aren't academic dependant though and creativity, charisma and communication skills are valued highly by employers and recruitment agencies
