Careers in media are often fast-paced and exciting. It is a competitive sector with relatively few employment opportunities and many applicants actively seeking work. Overall, the industry only employs about half a million professionals in the UK, despite having steadily expanded its workforce throughout the past decade.
Many positions are quite demanding, and can involve long working hours and travel. Although nearly half of all professionals in the sector possess university degrees, most jobs have no specific academic requirements. Relevant industry experience is far more important, and internships are therefore a popular way to find entrance to the field. Employers look for creative individuals with strong social skills, the ability to perform under pressure, and fast thinking. Recruitment agencies commonly list opportunities for event managers, makeup artists, and journalists. Networking and direct enquiries, however, are the most effective way to find work in the sector. It is estimated that only about one-third of all positions are filled by job advertising.
Salaries range from £18K up to £53K annually, while the overall nationwide average is about £30K. London offers particularly high compensation and is the centre for most jobs in the field. The largest employers in the UK's media industry are WPP, Sky, Bloomberg, M&G, and Saatchi.
