The electronics industry employs more than 185,000 personnel and consists of over 10,000 workplaces nationwide. The industry is worth an impressive £23 billion annually, making the UK the world’s fifth-largest electronics producer. Electronics manufacturing is also a sector with a long history here, as the first working television was demonstrated in London in 1926. Today, consumer electronics are an important part of life in the UK and exert a strong influence over nearly every business and social institution in the nation.
Positions and salaries
Opportunities for employment are particularly prolific in London, where personnel are often paid substantially higher salaries. Electronics recruitment agencies frequently offer positions for VLSI engineers, technical wiring and assembly experts, RF engineers, and digital signal processing specialists.
Entry requirements
For entrance into the industry, most positions require relevant academic degrees, and many roles also require post-graduate study. 91% of professionals in the field are full-time employees, and a very low percentage of those working in the sector are self-employed. Outside of London, the South East and South West employ the highest concentrations of electronics personnel.
