Lancashire is a county in the North West of England, with a population of roughly 1.4 million people. The county made a name for itself during the Industrial Revolution when, during the 19th century, almost 85% of cotton manufacturing occurred in here.
Today, the majority of all employment in the area comes from the service industries, although manufacturing also retains a strong presence in the county and is accountable for 16% of jobs. Lancashire County Council, based in Preston is the area's most significant employer, with the public administration, health and education sectors contributing a quarter of the area's employment.
Another important employer in the county is BAE Military Air Solutions which has major sites in Warton and Samlesbury. The county town of Lancashire is Lancaster, a culturally historic location that offers such attractions as Lancaster Castle, Ashton Memorial and The Grand Theatre. Falling within the larger City of Lancaster district, the area has a population of nearly 140K people and provides some of the leading job prospects outside of Preston, Blackpool and Blackburn.
