More Information
A production operator, sometimes called a machine operator, is hired to work on the creation of products from raw materials. This process may involve the creation of food, textile, rubber, paper and plastic final products, among many others. Operation of machinery is very common in this role.
The recruitment agencies listed on this page specialise in filling production operator positions in UK factories.
There are not normally any specific qualifications required to enter this job role, although having GCSEs in subjects such as English, maths, technology and science may well be of benefit.
Apprenticeships offer another way into this career, where a production firm trains a person up to do a specific set of tasks, usually involving machinery operation. There are a wide range of NVQs that can be taken once a position has been gained.
Experience in previous positions involving production of any type is also likely to be valuable when applying for such a position. Experience of working with and maintaining machinery will make the candidate stand out for a prospective employer.
Starting salaries for production operators tend to be around £12,000, but this can rise with experience, or as more responsibilities are taken on. Some complicated production processes may involve higher pay.
