The workforce here is primarily white collar, with Finance, Tourism, and Healthcare providing the mainstays of the local job market.

Worth about £11 billion annually, Edinburgh has the second strongest economy in the UK. Recruitment agencies claim jobs in Banking and Finance are found in particular abundance in Edinburgh, and account for roughly one-third of all employment opportunities in the city. The Royal Bank of Scotland, with a staff of more than 9,000, is the area's top employer. Lloyds, Standard Life, and Scottish Widows are also major employment providers.
