More information

The property industry provides employment opportunities for a wide range of professionals from many different backgrounds and specialisms. Jobs exist in the private and public sectors, as well as with many not-for-profit organisations. It is estimated that more than 350,000 people are currently working in property related roles, and well over 100,000 businesses contribute to the industry. These companies are predominately small, and the vast majority have fewer than 10 employees.

Qualifications and key competencies

Recruitment agencies frequently find placement for residential property managers, new home sales staff, estate agents, and commercial property experts. Jobs in the field often require expertise in financing and mortgages, as well as a deep understanding of current market trends. Although academic degrees and NVQs are certainly helpful for jobseekers in the sector, they are not always necessary. Nonetheless, many positions do require professional certifications and licences, which can be obtained through training institutions throughout the UK.

Salaries

Salaries start at around £15,000 annually. Average earnings nationwide are about £25,000 - 26,000. The top 10% of property specialists make upwards of £40,000 each year. The industry, however, is also one in which compensation is largely commission-based for many roles. Income, therefore, depends not only upon professional talent, but also the current outlook of the housing market. The UK's two largest employers are Savills and Barratt Developments.
