Encompassing a number of job roles including upholsterer, fabric cutter and interior designer, the furniture and textiles sectors are key contributors towards the manufacturing / production industry. They are worth a combined £20bn to the UK economy and are responsible for around 150K staff. These workers can range from sales, marketing and fashion personnel to more trade skilled professionals. As a result, furniture and textiles recruitment agencies are needed to search for technical candidates to fill permanent, contract and temporary vacancies.
A career in furniture and textiles can command different salaries depending on the specific job type. Other positions in the sector include frame assembler, cabinet maker, furniture sprayer, pattern cutter and an array of high street retail and senior manager roles. An agency or recruitment consultant will usually have access to professionals for all these positions.
Entry into the industry will generally require specific skills and textiles and furniture recruitment agencies are able to assess candidates to ensure that they have the necessary attributes. Sewing professionals for instance, won’t require high level qualifications but may have to pass a practical assignment in the interview. Likewise, employers will look for upholsterers with experience as opposed to academic credentials, although relevant courses such as NVQs and Diplomas are available. Other skills that should be highlighted on a CV when applying for a job include a creative flair, good time management and the ability to work in a team.
The North West, London and Yorkshire are some of the best locations for people aiming to enter this area of manufacturing, and specialist agencies will have the knowledge and expertise to facilitate the best hires for clients.
