West Yorkshire falls within the Humber region of the UK and has a population of nearly 2.2 million people. The county was largely built on textile manufacture, heavy engineering and coal mining, and though these industries have seen decline, manufacturing, construction and distribution are still major employers in the area.
The county is one of Britain's most diverse regions in population, employment and salaries. Rapidly becoming the UK's primary financial centre outside of London, Leeds is the third biggest city in Britain and also a focus for information and communication positions. Around 120,000 people here are employed in business or financial services jobs and adverts with recruitment agencies show that high salaries can be found in these fields. The entire service sector in the city employs more than 340,000 people and this, with the rise of the finance industry, means that unemployment is only about 1% above the national average.
The public sector is another major source of employment across the region, with Leeds City Council alone employing 33,000 staff. Coal mining was also once a big industry in West Yorkshire and the remaining Kellingley colliery is one of the few working mines left in the UK. It is however, still the country's largest producer of coal and directly provides around 700 jobs. Additionally, two of Britain's four major supermarkets are based in the region; Asda in Leeds and Morrisons in Bradford.
Bradford, Huddersfield and Wakefield are the other leading cities in West Yorkshire, with the latter seeing considerable redevelopment over the last decade. Castleford is the largest town within Wakefield and home to nearly 40K people. The rate of regeneration here has largely mirrored that of the rest of the district, but unemployment is still seen as problem. The arrivals of Xscape (an indoor ski slope and entertainment venue) and the Freeport shopping village, has brought more visitors to the town and given a boost to the local economy. Burberry also bases one of two UK production plants in Castleford.
