West Yorkshire falls within the Yorkshire and the Humber region of the UK. The county was largely built on textile manufacture, heavy engineering and coal mining, and though these industries have seen decline, manufacturing, construction and distribution are still major employers in the area.
The county is one of Britain’s most diverse regions in population, employment and salaries. Rapidly becoming the UK’s primary financial centre outside of London, Leeds is a focus for information and communication positions.
The public sector is another major source of employment across the region. Additionally, two major supermarkets are based in the region: Asda in Leeds and Morrisons in Bradford.
Bradford, Huddersfield and Wakefield are the other leading settlements in West Yorkshire. Castleford is the largest town within Wakefield. The rate of regeneration here has largely mirrored that of the rest of the district, but unemployment is still seen as a problem. The arrivals of Xscape (an indoor ski slope and entertainment venue) and the Freeport shopping village have brought more visitors to the town and given a boost to the local economy. Burberry also bases one of two UK production plants in Castleford.
