More information

On the north east coast of England is the county of Cleveland, where Middlesbrough is its biggest town. It is a ceremonial county only and marks the border between County Durham and North Yorkshire.

Economic overview

Within just a few decades, the region went from a rural hamlet to a booming centre for industry thanks to the onset of the iron industry in the area in the 19th century. Today, Teesport remains one of the primary ports in the UK and still has a large number of heavy industrial plants in the county.

The region has an average employment rate of 70.5%, which is below the national statistics by about 6%. Its workers are generally lower skilled, however take-home wages are not far from the national average at £471 a week.

Recruitment agencies in recent times have been found to look for staff in the digital and creative sectors, thanks to the creation of Middlesbrough's Digital City. Efforts have also been made by the local authority to focus away from workers' narrow employment choices to a few large local employers in the public and industry sectors, and instead look towards emerging industries such as energy and chemical. The Local Enterprise Growth Initiative is evidence of a step towards the support of new organisations.
