Worcester is a city in the West Midlands with a population of 98,000. It was once an important manufacturing centre but, although some firms in the sector remain, its economy has changed rapidly over the past 40 years.
Key industries and employers
Almost a third of all jobs in the city are in the public sector, with Worcestershire Royal Hospital and Worcester City Council among the largest employers. The hospitality and tourism sector provides employment for 22% of the workforce, with financial services (20%) the third largest source of jobs.
Manufacturing accounts for 11% of positions in Worcester itself, with many of those staff based at Shire Business Park, where boilermaker Worcester Bosch Group and machine tool builder Yamazaki Mazak have their UK operations. The famous Lea & Perrins factory, now owned by Heinz, and can maker CarnaudMetalbox Engineering are among the other major employers.
Both engineering and industrial recruitment agencies also supply staff to a wide range of manufacturers located within easy travelling distance of the city. Senoble, which makes the Elisabeth the Chef food range, and defence technology company QinetiQ both have large sites in the area.
Economic overview and salaries
Worcester benefits from a well educated workforce, with 34.9% of them having qualifications at NVQ4 level or higher. It is hoped the growth of the University of Worcester and its specialist research units will help to further improve this figure.
The average weekly wage for a full-time worker in the city in 2012 was £499.50, which was slightly below the national figure, but £30 higher than the norm for the West Midlands. The proportion of people unemployed was below both the national and regional averages at 7.3%.
