With large and busy airports scattered across the UK, the demand for skilled ground staff to ensure the safe and smooth running of aircraft is huge. There are a variety of roles which come under the umbrella term for ground staff, which includes baggage and cargo handlers and cleaners of aircraft between flights.
Job responsibilities
Those seeking ground staff employment must recognise that each role is usually a physical one, with workers being expected to lift heavy goods to and from terminal buildings and aircraft, working with ropes and ramps, securing doors and manoeuvring heavy stairs. Therefore, candidates are expected to be physically fit and healthy and must be prepared to work outside in all weathers in a fast-paced environment.
Skills required
Job seekers looking at ground staff job vacancies in recruitment agencies and adverts are expected to have skills in teamwork, communication and have an eye for detail. Those with limited academic qualifications need not be put off, as attitude and skillset counts for more when managers recruit ground staff.
This does mean that pay can be average or only meet minimum wage requirements, depending on responsibility within the role. Candidates may find that career progression can be a perk as opportunities may present themselves up to cabin crew or other better-paid positions within the airport.
