Most Popular Locations for Sport, Recreation & Leisure
The Sport, Recreation & Leisure industry is a significant source of employment opportunity in the UK, and provides jobs for about 2% of the national workforce: some 600,000 people. It is also a growing sector, which has been steadily expanding its employment base in recent years as gyms and recreation centres pop up nationwide.
Most of the positions commonly available through recruitment listings involve spa and beauty, fitness, massage, and personal training. The majority of the sector's workforce is aged 20-35, and most roles require fitness-minded individuals. Working hours can sometimes be irregular and anti-social, as night and weekend shifts are obligatory for certain jobs. More than half of all professionals in the sector are employed on a part-time basis, which is roughly twice the average for most other industries in the UK.
Salaries typically start around £15,000 annually, and about 45% of those employed in the sector earn between £20-25K. Earnings, however, can reach as much as £40K or more. In London, employees can expect to earn significantly more than their counterparts elsewhere in the UK, and average incomes in the city are about £33,000. The North East and South West are also relatively high-paying regions.
