Veterinary Assistant is an entry-level job role in Animal Care. Candidates provide basic care to patients, working under trained Veterinary Surgeons and RVNs.
While there tend to be no set academic requirements to get a job as a Veterinary Assistant, many employers seek candidates with basic qualifications such as GCSEs. Experience of working with animals, either at home or through employment (paid or voluntary), is advantageous, as is a passion for animal care.
For candidates wishing to gain qualifications relating to the role, BTEC National Awards, Certificates and Diplomas in Animal Management are likely to be useful. It may also be possible to enter into work as a Veterinary Assistant through an apprenticeship in Animal Care.
On-the-job training is provided to all new Veterinary Assistants by experienced staff. There may also be opportunities to work towards qualifications, such as Level 2 BTEC First Certificates and Diplomas in Animal Care.
Employment opportunities for veterinary Assistants can be found in private Veterinary hospitals and clinics in urban and rural locations. Jobs may also be available in Veterinary facilities run by animal welfare organisations. Vacancies may occasionally be advertised through trade publications and recruitment agencies dealing with animal care jobs.
Newly-appointed veterinary assistants usually receive the national minimum wage. Experienced staff may receive salaries of around £14,000 £16,000 per year.
