More information
Combining engineering with materials science, metallurgy is a field that focuses on the extraction, study and shaping of metals. Candidates in this profession are in high demand and recruitment agencies are one option for helping employers hire qualified workers.
What is a metallurgist?
A metallurgist manufactures components or structures out of metal. They work with everything from iron to aluminium alloys to produce a wide variety of parts and products.
There are three main specialisms:
Chemical metallurgist - specialises in extraction and ore testing.
Physical metallurgist - studies metals under stress.
Process metallurgist - designs and shapes parts.
The job description will vary depending on the specialism, but typical responsibilities will include creating prototypes, investigating corrosion, conducting lab tests, providing technical advice and liaising with a team of other engineers and materials scientists.
There are few opportunities for contract or temporary work, with the majority of advertised vacancies being for permanent jobs.
Recruiting metallurgical engineers
The metallurgy recruitment market is candidate-driven, meaning that competition for the best talent is high. Employers of metallurgists, which can range from foundries to energy suppliers, may decide to use a recruitment agency to help give them an edge when hiring.
If your business is hiring, or you’re searching for work, recruiters with an expert knowledge of engineering may offer the most relevant service. As well as having access to jobs and candidates, they’ll also have an understanding of the required skills and accreditations - such as ICORR and IOM3.
