Historically, much of the towns economy lay within the shipping trade, as well as the paper and cement industries. It often benefits from having some of the highest temperatures in the UK during summer months, although it is not uncommon for it to snow there in winter.

32% of the population have qualification equal to NVQ4/5 or above, and the average weekly full-time wage is £525. 2012 employment figures state that unemployment in the area is currently 4.2%, which is 1% higher than the average for Kent.

Today, Gravesend is a bustling commercial town which houses several big employers, such as Tilbury Docks, the Port of London Authority, Daletech (electrical contractors), Britannia Refined Metals, Kimberly Clark (paper), Lafarge Cement, Comma Oil and Chemicals, and Rodenstock (optical equipment manufacturers). Public sector employers in the Borough of Gravesham include the Primary Care Trust, North West Kent College, and the Borough Council.

18.6% of Gravesends workers are employed within the wholesale and retail trade (including car and motorcycle repair). Almost 12% work in the construction industry, 10% in human health and social work, and 7.5% in manufacturing. Recruitment agencies often list staff positions in these sectors.
