Telephonists are responsible for answering and transferring calls within an organisation. Also referred to as switchboard or telephone operators, they play a key role in both admin and customer service functions.
There are no barriers to entry with regard to qualifications. Employers will seek candidates who are friendly, organised and have a good telephone manner. Prior experience in a customer-facing role is also beneficial. Training for telephonists will be provided on-the-job, with new hires usually being required to work alongside senior staff members until they become comfortable in the role.
Advances in technology mean that the role of a telephonist has changed. Much of the position can now be automated, but organisations across all industries will still seek suitable candidates. Employers will typically look to contact agencies that specialise in office support and general staffing, however, short term vacancies are common in this field, so temp agencies are also in demand.
