Broadcasting is a fiercely competitive industry but it is also one that is constantly in need of new talent, technicians and hard-working professionals.
Staff seeking employment in television or radio must be dedicated and single-minded if they are to succeed across the vast array of different sectors within the industry. Recruitment agencies will work to place candidates in jobs on the front line of broadcasting, with roles such as producers, editors and schedulers. But staff will also be needed for roles in accountancy, consultancy, administration and planning.
While a degree or professional qualifications may needed for some positions, the majority will depend on previous experience and work experience to demonstrate a willingness to learn and dedication to the industry.
Entry salaries can start from around £15,000 but the most senior positions in broadcasting can demand more than £100,000. The BBC are the biggest employer in the industry and recruit staff in all parts of the country. While much of its operation is based London, the corporation also has a major operation in Manchester.
ITV and Sky are also major employers but there are thousands of smaller companies in the industry. Recruitment agencies may initially place staff in freelance or part-time roles, but there will be a large proportion of permanent positions too.
