Positions in health and safety are offered in both the private and public sectors, some involving business advisory services while others manage inspection and certification processes. In general, the sector demands an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of relevant legislation and involves working closely with businesses to minimise risks and eliminate potential hazards, both in terms of physical accidents and health concerns.
Due to recently implemented government regulations, health inspection in large-scale food and drink production has become especially important for the sector. Companies offering employment opportunities in the field range from huge multinational corporations to small advisory organisations, and positions can range from in-house inspection to outside consultation and auditing services. Most roles involve working closely with the NHS and local government to ensure all relevant regulations are consistently met. For most jobs in the sector, strong communication skills are a necessity because identifying problems and negotiating more responsible practices with clients is essential to the work.
Many roles also require an accredited degree or HND in occupational safety, engineering, chemistry, or health studies. Applicants with working experience in the specific industry they will be assessing are particularly desirable for most employers. Ideal applicants in the field must be detail-oriented, scientifically minded, and able to use a wide variety of inspection equipment.
