Classroom Assistants or Teaching assistants work alongside teachers with individual or groups of pupils to enhance the learning experience. The role depends on the age of the children, for example in a Nursery or Primary school with pupils aged 3-11 the Classroom assistant will be expected to help prepare the room, setting up equipment etc, listening to children read or telling/ reading stories, helping with school activities, sports events, outings etc., helping maintain records or assisting a child who is distressed. Most Teaching Assistants in Secondary schools work as special needs assistants often in a learning support department with individuals or small groups of pupils.
Part time and full time positions are available and this type of work is especially suitable for people with young families due to the school hours. There are no specific qualifications for this role but experience of working with children is valuable as are good literacy and numeracy skills.
