More information
A Site Manager, also known as a Construction Manager or Site Agent, is employed to oversee the running of a Construction project. Whether you're looking for work or hoping to employ a Site Manager, there are recruitment agencies available that deliver staffing solutions tailored to the vocation.
When looking to hire a Site Manager, employers may decide to approach a specialist Construction recruitment agency. While a specialist firm may have particular experience in recruiting for the role, some multi-sector consultancies will also source appropriate professionals. Agencies that recruit for Site Management staff can be found nationwide, however major cities such as London, Manchester and Edinburgh typically have the highest concentration of recruiters. Although candidates may find permanent employment with a building company, the short-term nature of Construction projects means that many Site Managers will be recruited on a contract basis.
Job description, salaries and qualifications
A Site Manager is accountable for everything that happens on a building site, making sure that the project is completed on time and within budget. The responsibilities of a Site Manager may therefore include assembling a team of tradespeople, supervising staff and monitoring health & safety. Salaries for a Site Manager job will vary as a result of a candidate's experience. An Assistant Site Supervisor may command pay of £17,000, with Junior Construction Managers usually having a starting salary of around £27,000. This can potentially rise to in excess of £40,000, while Senior Site Managers can earn £60,000.
In order to become a qualified Site Manager, job seekers will require a degree in a relevant field. This may include Construction Management, Surveying & Civil Engineering or Building Studies. Chartered status is awarded by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), however a period of training is generally needed before attaining this.
Employment opportunities
Site Managers are usually hired by building companies, with many choosing to use recruitment agencies to find the right staff for their vacancy. Subcontractors also offer career prospects to candidates, as do Civil Engineering firms. After years of experience, candidates could also move into a consultancy job
