More information
The construction industry is an important source of jobs in Lincolnshire, with 5.4% of the county's workforce employed in it. However, the sector struggled during the economic downturn of recent years and its recovery looks set to be slow.
Estimates compiled for a Construction Skills Network report showed that the industry's output in the area will continue to fall until 2014, before returning to growth in 2015, thanks largely to an upturn in the amount of repair and maintenance work. Overall employment in the sector is likely to fall until 2017, but there should be an increase in demand for staff with wood trades, fit out and bricklaying skills, as well as for qualified civil engineers.
Interserve and Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions are among the top UK construction companies to have offices in Lincolnshire, while locally-based businesses such as Lindum Group and Gelder Group are also major employers in the county. Most of the jobs in the area tend to be permanent, although trades and construction recruitment agencies do supply experienced staff for short-term work on large-scale projects.
Salaries in all industries in Lincolnshire are generally well below the national average, and construction jobs are no exception. Experienced quantity surveyors can expect to be paid between £30,000 and £35,000 a year, while bricklayers usually earn from £10 to £12 an hour.
