A PHP Developer works primarily with the PHP server-side scripting language. PHP is often the ‘P’ component of a LAMP stack, and a PHP Developer’s skills will often extend beyond simply using one technology. This will definitely be the case for a full-stack developer. PHP Developers will be proficient in the use of languages such as HTML, CSS and Javascript, as well as MVC frameworks such as Laravel, Zend or CodeIgniter. Knowledge of databases such as MySQL and Oracle, as well as various CMS such as Wordpress and Drupal will also be useful in this role.
As a candidate, an educational background in Computer Science or a related field will stand you in good stead as a PHP Developer, but is not always a necessity. A degree in Computer Science is a good choice for an ambitious Developer who wants to gain a broad grounding in their field, and will often give access to the most lucrative jobs.
In terms of salary, PHP Developer jobs tend to start at around £18,000-£20,000 for a junior role. More experienced developers will earn more money, and the most senior jobs in this sector can command a salary of anything up to £60,000. Senior roles will require a Developer to have a broad and well-rounded skill-set, and knowledge of how their work fits into the wider business picture.
