An information, advice and guidance advisor, or IAG advisor, is employed to help people who are in a transitional phase in theirlife, often as regards personal development, changes of career or education and training. They may work with the newly and long term unemployed, or those with disabilities or who lack qualifications.

Candidates will benefit from possessing a degree or HND, but personal qualities and relevant experience are usually much more important. Those interested in such a career should gain experience in such fields as education, community work, mainstream careers work, welfare advice, social work and counselling.
Once in a role, further training may be done, such as for the Qualification in Careers Guidance (QCG) awarded by the Institute of Career Guidance (ICG).
An IAG advisor will usually work 9 to 6, Monday to Friday, but additional work may be required on evenings and weekends.
Starting salaries range between £18,000 and £20,000, rising to £27,000 or more after several years experience. Team leader level roles tend to pay between £25,000 and £35,000. Those in senior roles can command £35,000 upwards.
