Often called the Granite City because so many of its walls and buildings are built from the iconic rock, this Scottish port city was once voted the happiest in the UK. Aberdeen is also sometimes called the Oil Capital of Europe, and drilling success in the North Sea has made it one of the most prosperous economic powerhouses in Great Britain. In fact, it was the only city in the UK to grow during the recent recession, and has enjoyed unemployment rates consistently below 2% for the past 30 years. (For comparison, the national average was 6% in 2011.) Aberdeen currently employs more than half a million in the oil and gas industry alone, and 25% of the workforce is employed in the city's energy sector.
But oil isn't the only economic asset in Aberdeen. With wind, wave, and solar power, sustainable energy providers are also fuelling the city's growth, and turning to Aberdeen Recruitment Agencies for new talent. There are more than 400 energy companies currently based here, and it is estimated that more than half are expanding. Another 17% of Aberdeen's population works in the agriculture, food, and fishing industry, which is worth about £7 billion annually. Tourism is another major force in the economy, bringing some 26,000 jobs and £300 million to the region. Best of all, employment prospects promise to remain strong in coming years. Because over half of Aberdeen's workforce is now aged 45 or older, the city is expected to need 120,000 new staff by 2022.
