Working within most industries and sub-sectors, administration personnel are responsible for carrying out the daily tasks that ensure the smooth operation of a company. Receptionists, secretaries, office managers and personal assistants can be employed in a range of business types and undertake tasks including organising appointments and data entry. Administration / secretarial candidates can expect to work a standard 9-5 week, however the industry in Yorkshire is seeing an increase in the number of part time and flextime employees. Non graduates are the most common entrants into the field, but they may be encouraged by their employer to gain an industry related qualification. The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), offers a foundation course that provides candidates with a diverse selection of administrative skills that will make them suitable for a range of career paths. There are graduate routes into the industry though with a Bachelors in Business Administration or a similarly weighted degree proving helpful.

Admin and secretarial personnel are expected to be strong communicators whilst also possessing good IT and organisational skills.
