Ready for a Change?

Changing your career or changing your job can undoubtedly revitalise your life by giving it new drive and focus. It can also of course be very daunting. But with some careful thought and consideration you could find yourself in a position you find much more rewarding.

"Wouldn't it be better if..."

When considering any job or career change, it is useful to spend some time at the very beginning of the process trying to determine exactly why you want a change. If you are not rigorous in finding out exactly what is motivating your desire for the change, then you run the risk of finding yourself with the same old problems you encountered in the job or career you left.

There could be very specific reasons for seeking new employment, for example you may simply want to earn more money, or to change your geographical location. However sometimes the reasons aren't so obvious. Maybe you just feel jaded and fed up with your current position, but are not entirely sure why? Take a close look at your job to see which aspects you would like to change: is it the actual content of your job and, if so, why? Have you become so proficient that it has become tedious? Alternatively, are you perhaps struggling to cope with the workload or type of work you undertake? Is there an aspect of the workplace itself which you find difficult, perhaps the location, the hours you work, or even your relationship with those you work with. It can be useful to imagine your ideal working life and environment and then re-examine your current position to see what aspects you would change in order to achieve your aims. You may however decide that it is simply time to change career paths entirely and to look for a job within a different sector. Once you have a clear idea of why you want to change, you can then select the positions you apply for much more carefully and, in turn, you should stand a better chance of finding a position which will meet your newly defined criteria.

Be Prepared!

If you have decided that a change in career or job is for you, then the next stage is to make sure your applications are of the highest possible quality. In order to give yourself the best chance of securing the job you want, your CV and application form will need to hit just the right note, to ensure that the recruiters can clearly see you have the skills and experience they are looking for.
