The retail industry is an important contributor to the Nottinghamshire economy and accounts for around 15% of jobs in the area. There is a range of employment opportunities in the sector, including both customer facing positions and head office roles.
Nottingham has the sixth largest retail sector in the UK, thanks in part to the success of the Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh Centre, both of which are due to undergo major refurbishment projects in the next few years. The city also has a selection of independent retailers, while there are a number of out-of-town retail parks across the county, including Castle Meadow, Chilwell and Riverside.
The largest employer of retail staff in the area is Alliance Boots, as the pharmacy chain's head office operation is in Nottingham, while Homeware chain Wilkinson and tools retailer Machine Mart also have their headquarters in the county. As in most places in the UK, Tesco, Sainsbury's and John Lewis Partnership are among the major employers of retail workers in Nottinghamshire.
Most of the retail jobs in the area are permanent, although specialist recruitment agencies do occasionally supply temporary store managers and sales assistants. Salaries in Nottinghamshire are typically in line with national averages, with buyers earning between £40,000 and £60,000, store managers paid in the region of £30,000 and sales assistants receiving from £12,000 to £20,000 a year.
