Designers play a vital role in the creative sector, using their artistic skills to bring ideas to life in a variety of ways.
According to research by the Design Council, there are an estimated 232,000 designers in employment in the UK, a figure which has increased by 29% since 2005. The design industry is centred around London and the South East, with four in 10 design businesses based in the area. The largest proportion of design companies work in communications design (62%), followed by digital and multimedia agencies(48%).
More than a quarter of designers in the UK are employed as freelancers, with 36% working in design consultancies and 36% employed as part of an in-house design team. Salary levels for design staff vary according to experience and speciality, but averages around £30,000 per year. Pay levels tend to be considerably higher in the capital.
Many designers start out by studying art or design at degree or HND level, although experience and portfolios are more important in the industry. Knowledge of digital design packages is also an essential skill.
Recruitment agencies will prove to be a valuable resource in connecting jobseekers interested in design roles and creative companies looking for staff.
