Woking, in the home county of Surrey built up as a modern commuter town with the coming of the railway in the 19th century. Woking is still very much a commuter town, with train links to London's Waterloo in under 30 minutes. That is not to say that there isn't significant employment in the area, however, and with the recent investment in the McLaren Group technology centre, staff levels in the town are only set to increase.
Unemployment levels in the area stand at just 4.7%, which is significantly lower than the rest of the country. 37.6% of all employment in the area is accounted for by Financial and IT services, and 20.4% by Distribution, Hotels, and Restaurants. As the home of the McLaren Group, much of Woking's employment can be found at the company's headquarters as well as at the McLaren Automotive plant. Altogether the company has a staff of over 2000 in the area.
There are other significant employers based in Woking, however, including SAB Miller the drinks company, who have a staff of 1000, Cap Gemini who employ 500 people, and WWF-UK who will have a staff of over 300 by the end of 2013. It is advisable for anyone looking for employment in Woking that they use the services of a specialist recruitment agency, as many employers in the area will advertise staff vacancies and opportunities through such agencies.
