The cathedral city of Lincoln is situated in the county of Lincolnshire in England. The city's name is believed to have originated from the name the Celts gave their settlement during the Iron Age, when it was called "Lindon" (meaning "the pool"). In 2011, the total population was estimated to be around 93,000.
The city was a major industrial hub in the 19th and 20th centuries, but many of these former businesses have now stopped production. Thankfully, regeneration in the area has come from new companies, such as Lincs FM radio and LA Fitness, moving into the empty industrial space.
The major employment sectors in Lincoln centre around farming, commerce, tourism and administration. The Information Technology (IT) industry is also a rapidly expanding sector, while the creation of the University of Lincoln, which has more than 10,000 students, has attracted new businesses, shops and staff to the city centre.
The retail sector is another large employer in and around the city. A new £100 million development called Lindongate is in the process of being built and will create upwards of 2,500 jobs when it is complete.
