Wigan is a town in the North West of England with a population of about 81,000. Formerly a mill town with a history of coal mining, Wigan, like much of the rest of the country is now predominately a service industries based economy.
76.8% of the town's employment comes from the service industries, with 25.3% of this figure accounted for by Distribution, Hotel, and Food services. Only 24.7% of employment is to be found in Public Administration, Health, and Education which is lower than the national average of 27% but, nevertheless, still a significant proportion. Manufacturing may only supply 13.9% of all employment in the town, but this is higher than the national average and may well be attributed to the presence of the Heinz food manufacturing facility in Wigan which is the largest of its kind in Europe and as such employs a large number of staff in the area. Girobank and Totes the chain of bookmakers both have their headquarters in the town and employ a significant number of staff, with Totes alone providing almost 300 positions in Wigan.
