The historic city of Exeter lies at the very southern end of the M5 motorway, in the popular tourist county of Devon. It boasts its own international airport, and the railway station lies on the main London to South-West train line. The area offers visitors plenty of attractions which boost its economy all-year-round, such as the Cathedral, Northernhay Gardens and the nearby castle ruins.
It is currently home to a population of 111,300, which increases by around 1,000 a year. The town may be quite small in size when compared to other south-west cities like Bristol, but what it lacks in size, it more than compensates for with its high-quality environment, and is reported to be one of the top 10 most profitable locations for businesses to be based.
The largest employers in the city include the Met Office, BT, EDF Energy, the Highways Agency, Flybe, the University of Exeter, and Devon County Council. Another major employment source is the banking, insurance, and finance sector, which employs 18% of the working population at locations like Friends Provident. 20% of the workforce is employed in the public administration, education and health sector. The average annual wage for a full-time member of staff is £30,250.
The city continues to enjoy a prospering economy, and you will therefore find many job vacancies listed with local and national recruitment agencies.
