Notable local employers include South Ayrshire Council whose administrative headquarters are located in the town. Many people are also employed in the health sector including the workforces at Ayr's three hospitals - Ayr Hospital is an acute facility with an Accident and Emergency Department; Ailsa Hospital deals with mental health problems and the Abbey Carrick Glen Hospital is a private healthcare facility.
Employment is also provided at Hollybush House, a centre run by charity to care for the mental welfare of former members of the United Kingdom's armed forces.

The latest major retail development to create jobs took place in 2006 with the opening of the Ayr Central Shopping Centre. This complex includes branches of department store Debenhams and fashion retailer H and M as well, as parking for 500 vehicles.
