Sat to the east of the majestic Pennines, South Yorkshire includes the cities of Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster. The region has a population of about 1.34 million and was formerly dominated by the manufacturing industry, with a long and much lauded history as the capital of steel production.
Although the economy is now dominated by the service industries, with 81.4% of employment being accounted for as such, manufacturing is still an important and significant employer in the area. 12.2% of all employment in South Yorkshire can be found in manufacturing which is higher than the national average and indicative of the county's economic history. Sheffield, as the home of stainless steel is still globally recognised as a centre for metallurgy and steel-manufacturing, and most crucially Forgemasters is still based in the city and employs staff in the local area. South Yorkshire Advanced Manufacturing Park has attracted major companies to the area, such as Rolls Royce and Castings Technology International providing significant jobs in the area. Corus Engineering Steels plant is also located near Rotherham and is a major employer, and in the financial services sector, Norton Finances, also headquartered in Rotherham has a staff of about 250 people.
