County Londonderry (also known as County Derry), is situated in the north-east of Ireland, and is one of the six counties that form the country of Northern Ireland. It shares its borders with Antrim to the east, Donegal to the west, Tyrone to the south, the Irish Sea to the north, and is approximately 55 miles north-west of the country's capital, Belfast.
The estimated population of the area is 233,500, and just over half of its inhabitants are Catholic, with the remaining 45% being Protestant. The largest towns and cities in the area are Derry, Coleraine, and Limavady. Derry City is the second largest city in Northern Ireland after Belfast, and has been one of the fastest-growing urban areas for the past 25 years.
It has a large and skilled workforce, many of whom work for the growing IT sector, as well as the chemical manufacturing industry. Key employers in the area include Fujitsu, DuPont/Invista, Western Connect, Singularity, local borough councils, and the University of Ulster (in Coleraine), which employs more than 3,000 members of staff.
The average wage for a member of staff in full-time employment is around £26,000. The unemployment rates across the county are very diverse, with Derry having a relatively high rate of 8.8% (which is 3.4% higher than the NI average), compared
to just 4.5% in Coleraine.
