Popular industry sectors in Reading
More information
Ranked amongst the wealthiest towns in the UK, Reading's close proximity to London and status as a leader in the high-tech sector provide a strong case for business investment in the area. With a population of 155,700 in the 2011 Census, and representing a powerful force in the UK's IT industry, Reading is also a well-known commercial hub with strong Finance and Insurance sectors. As investment continues to pour into the Berkshire region, economic analysts expect the local economy to grow by 3.4% until at least 2020.
Recruitment agencies in Reading are largely concentrated in the town centre, to the south of the railway station. Given the town's thriving economy, there are a multitude of agencies available in the area, recruiting for everything from permanent and contract vacancies, to temporary and interim roles. Whether you are looking for employment yourself, or need to hire staff, recruitment agencies are an excellent way to achieve your goals.
Employment in a south-eastern powerhouse
As one of the first towns in the UK to make a successful transition from a production-driven economy to one based on service, Reading asserted itself as a technological powerhouse as early as the 1990s, drawing the likes of Microsoft, Oracle and HP (who all have their UK HQs in Reading), as well as Cisco Systems. In addition to these tech giants, top local employers include Reading Borough Council (with a staff of 6,000), and the University of Reading (with 4,000 employees).
The Finance and IT sectors account for many of the employment opportunities available in Reading - in keeping with much of the south-east - while the public sector is also important in terms of job-creation. Tourism is a major economic driver in the south-east region, and the 2011 Census showed that 5.9% (4719) of jobs in Reading were in Accommodation and Food Service activities. Manufacturing was shown to employ 4.9% (3949).
Transport in Reading
To put it precisely, the 'centre' of London lies just over 40 miles down the M4 from Reading. At most times of the day this journey can be driven in around an hour - although this rises somewhat with traffic. Trains from Reading to London depart every few minutes during the day, and can take as little as 30 mins. Because of its location on the M4 motorway, close to the M40 and M25 routes, Reading enjoys enviable transport connections with the rest of the UK. It is a viable commuter location for many cities, including London, Oxford, and Southampton.
